A gemstone is the naturally occurring crystalline form of a mineral, which is desirable for its beauty, valuable in its rarity and durable enough to be enjoyed for generations. There are more than 40 popular gem varieties and many more rare collector gemstones. Although some gemstone varieties have been treasured since before recorded history and others were only discovered recently, they are all nature's gifts to us.

Information is listed about name etymology, places of origin, placement on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, metaphysical properties, and other interesting tid bits. Gemstones are listed in alphabetical order and examples of current Midori Jewelry styles for most of the gemstones are given. If you like a particular gemstone, do a search to find all styles available with your favorite gemstone.

Please email me with any further questions or about a particular gemstone you'd like to know about that isn't on the list yet. Bear in mind that this is a work in progress. Have fun and learn something new. The world of gemstones is fascinating, and it's no surprise what ignited humankind's love affair with the wondrous treasures of the Earth and Sea.
